The Clarinet
The Clarinet is an instrument of the woodwind family, that consists of a cylindrical bore and a flared bell, played with a single reed. The clarinet is quite a distinctive instrument both in sound and physical appearance. The distinctive physical appearance of the clarinet is described above, the clarinet is usually black and consists of a cylindrical body that is mostly in the same diameter, ending on a flared bell. The Bb clarinet is straight. It have 17 keys and 7 holes, in which some are ringed under the Boehm system and some that are not. It's appearance is distinct from other common woodwind instruments such as the flute, or the saxophone because it is made from wood and plastic instread of metals or brass, and that it is also mostly black in colour. It also differs from the oboe because of its single reed and a wide mouthpiece. Sound-wise, there are many characteristics of the clarinet that makes it distinct from other instruments. First of all, the clarinet's sound is created by the vibration of the reed, which makes it a woodwind instrument, and therefore have a different sound compared to the brass, strings or percussion section, because of the difference in the sound's origins. Although a woodwind instrument, the clarinet have a very distinctive and characteristic sound in which can be somewhat compared to the sound of a harmonica or an organ, that can be easily distinguished from other instruments. Secondly, the clarinet have a very wide range as well, which is their key distinctiveness from other instruments, and that is the ability to play a wide range of notes with consistency and ease. Its note range than all other woodwind instruments. Thirdly, the clarinet is distinct from other instruments because of its dynamic range, being able to play very quitely (at ppp) and very loudly (fff) with no problems, unlike other instruments such as the trumpets or the flutes. Lastly, the clarinet is also distinct from other instruments because of their overblowing characteristics. Unlike most other woodwind instruments, overblowing on the clarinet would not go to the eighth tone, but to the duodecime-key (12th tone), which can be very beneficial or destructive to clarinet players sometimes.
