Performance of "Clarinet Concerto in A" by Thea King
The following is a performance of the "Clarinet Concerto in A" (Mozart) by the famous clarinet player Thea King. Thea King was a famous British clarinet player, whom was born on December 26, 1925 and died on June 26, 2007. She was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, and began playing instruments at the age of 4, under the influence of her musical mother. She started by playing the piano throughout her childhood. In the last year of high school, she was introduced to the clarinet and began playing it at her school, which was Bedford High School. Since then, she attended the Royal College of Music and studied clarinet as her second instrument, with piano as well. However, throughout her lifetime, she went on to be a more famous clarinet player than a piano player and was known for many different performances throughout the world as a clarinettist, especially being the first clarinet in the English Chamber Orchestra (in which the following performance was by). She appeared in all major music festivals during her time in England as well as throughout other parts of Europe, Japan, Brazil, Hong Kong and even the USA. She played a basset clarinet throughout her career. She also went on to be a teacher or professor at the Guildhall School of Music and was named to be a Dame of the British Empire in 2001.
The following is a performance of the "Clarinet Concerto in A" by the English Chamber Orchestra in which featured Thea King and her clarinet. I really enjoyed this performance because of multiple factors in this piece that made it very pleasant and unique to listen to, in which is what I really like about it. The first factor would be the careful blend of instruments in this piece. Throughout the piece, every part of the orchestra, if it was the strings, the low brass or the clarinet feature, was very well balanced and blended with one and other and that smooth blend between the parts greatly enhanced each other and therefore created a very pleasant and unified overall sound in which I really enjoyed. The second factor that I enjoyed in this performance was the dynamics and the dynamic changes. Throughout the performance, there were many different dynamic measures and changes in which greatly contributed to mood the piece is trying to convey, if it is quiet at times or loud in others. As a result, the performance was able to express the mood of the piece very well and get me (the audience) into following and "flowing" with the music. It is able to create a very detailed and expressive mental picture in my head that correspond to the mood of the piece (quite lively and happy in some and slow and sad in others) and I thought that was very pleasant. Thirdly, I really enjoyed the lively tempo (in some parts of this piece) that is featured in the piece, in which was expressed with the quick, short notes and the staccatos throughout the piece. It really added to the lively mood (for those parts) and the beauty of the piece, which I really enjoyed. I also enjoyed how the lively tempo contrasted with the slow and long tempo that stretched through the most of the piece, as it adds a very nice change in the piece which I enjoyed. Lastly, and most importantly, the thing that I liked the most about this performance was the sound of the clarinet in this piece. I thought that Thea King played the featured part very well. I really liked the smooth, well phrased, and dynamic filled notes of her performance. I also liked how she brought out the full, distinct and beautiful sound of the clarinet for all the notes in the piece, while playing a wide range of notes in this performance, at a wide range of tempos and dynamics. She was able to hit every note perfectly with very sincere and deep emotions, in which the listeners are able to feel while listening to this piece. Overall, with the combination of these factors, the performance was able to present the meaning and the non-spoken message of this piece with a very pleasant sound (especially the clarinet) as well as deep emotions and feel that made this piece and performance very beautiful and amazing to listen to. It really moves the listener and get them lost (in a good way) in the beautiful timbre and sound of the featured instruments, which is why I really liked about this piece.
